What are pipe fittings and where do you use them?

Pipe fittings join to connect pipes and help you set up your plumbing system. one of our senior water specialists, helps you understand the different types of pipe fittings and how they are used.

What is a pipe fitting?

A pipe fitting is a threaded fitting that comes in different shapes to make different plumbing configurations. Pipe fittings include tees, elbows, Y fittings, couplings, reducers.

What are pipe fittings used for?

A pipe fitting joins the pipe and plumbing configurations. If you had to probe your entire home, you would need a pipe fitting in different parts of your home to branch the water supply or bend with the water supply so that the water turns in a corner.

What are the different pipe fittings and how do they work?

The elbows bend the water to 90 degrees or 45 degrees. The pipe enters at one end and exits at the other to make a 90 degree curve in the plumbing configuration. Use layered accessories to direct the water behind the walls. T-shirts branch off a line to feed different parts of your home. The couplers join the pipes so that you can run long lengths of pipe.

For other types of pipe fittings, see the plumbing glossary.

How do you know what pipe fitting you need?

The type of pipe connection you need depends on the type of pipe you are already using in your plumbing configuration. If you have a copper tube that runs through your home, you need copper fittings. If you have CPVC pipe, you need PVC fittings. If you have PEX tubes, you may need a variety of different PEX accessories or some type of PEX compatible material. The proper pipe fitting for the job also depends on its compatibility with the fluid that passes through the application. Also See Scaffolding Clamps

Is a pipe fitting measured by ID or OD?

ID means internal diameter. Measure the internal diameter to adjust the size of the NPT pipe fittings. You will not get an accurate measurement if you place a ruler, but it is measured by the internal diameter.

What is the size of the NPT thread?

NPT means national conical type, which means that the adjustment threads narrow. When threading the accessory, it is compressed against the other threads. You need teflon tape to bond them and. To better understand the thread size, see our article on how to determine the size and type of pipe thread.
